Dental anxiety affects millions of patients, many of whom are children. It’s often caused by past trauma in a dentist’s office, a strong or sensitive gag reflex, a fear of needles, or the inability to sit still in the treatment chair. Parents may struggle to figure out how to ensure their child receives essential oral healthcare without causing them additional anxiety or fear; however, many dentists now offer sedation as an effective way to create a calming experience. But is sedation dentistry safe for kids? Keep reading to find out.

What Types of Dental Sedation Are Available?

Depending on the dentist your child sees, they may only offer nitrous oxide, as it is considered the mildest and safest form of sedation. Others, though, may also provide oral conscious and IV sedation, both of which are more powerful and can cause longer-lasting side effects.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

With nitrous oxide, the process is fairly straightforward and poses little to no risk for children. When arriving for their appointment, your child will sit in the treatment chair and have a nasal mask placed over their nose. A staff member will turn on the nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture and instruct your little one to inhale.

As they breathe in the nitrous oxide (or laughing gas as it is more commonly known), the child will become more relaxed and comfortable. They will begin to feel at ease and less anxious about their visit.

Throughout their appointment, a team member will adjust the amount of gas your child receives, if necessary, before turning it off and removing the mask after treatment is complete. Within minutes of breathing pure oxygen, your little one will feel like their normal self and be able to resume regular activity.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe for Children?

Yes, nitrous oxide is safe for children as long as a trusted and experienced dental professional administers it. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics agree that dental sedation can help keep children calm and free of anxiety while at the dentist’s office.

Also, you can expect your child’s dentist to meet with both of you beforehand to discuss their eligibility. This includes discussing their overall health and well-being as well as any current medications they may be taking. This thorough analysis of your child’s medical history is important in determining whether it is safe for them to receive nitrous oxide.

If you think your child might benefit from dental sedation, talk to their dentist. This can be one of the most effective ways to ensure they get the care they need as well as change their view about visiting the dentist’s office.
