The dentist’s office can be a nerve-wracking experience for some patients. The thought of sitting still in the treatment chair can be enough to cause individuals to postpone or cancel their appointments altogether. However, with sedation dentistry, like nitrous oxide, it can calm a patient’s nerves and create a more comfortable and efficient experience. But does this mild form of sedation cause patients to become unconscious throughout treatment? Find out what is considered normal and why being “put to sleep” will not happen with nitrous oxide.

What Kind of Effects Occur with Nitrous Oxide?

When receiving nitrous oxide from a qualified dentist, a patient should not expect to become unconscious.

Unlike general anesthesia, which is known to cause patients to fall into a deep sleep and remain completely unaware of what is happening throughout their procedure, nitrous oxide is mild. It creates a relaxing sensation that lowers a person’s awareness of their surroundings so that greater comfort is achieved.

This is helpful if a patient does not do well with pain, as sedation helps increase this threshold, making injections and any other incisions more tolerable.

Does Nitrous Oxide Have Any Negative Side Effects?

It is rare that any patient experiences negative side effects after receiving nitrous oxide because of how mild it is; however, it’s not out of the question.

Some individuals have reported slight nausea, dizziness or headaches, fatigue, or confusion. If any of these issues develop, they will be temporary and dissipate soon after the mask is removed. However, it is recommended that individuals meet with their dentist beforehand to discuss any medical conditions or medications that might result in unsuccessful sedation.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Receiving nitrous oxide requires that a patient wear a nasal mask and inhale a combined mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Within minutes, the gas begins to dull one’s senses and create a relaxing effect.

Some patients may doze off but can easily be woken up by team members who need to communicate information or directions.

Once treatment is complete, the mask is removed, and the gas is turned off. After inhaling pure oxygen for several minutes, the patient should feel normal and be able to resume all regular activities following their appointment.

Nitrous oxide is one of the safest forms of sedation a person can receive. Although it does not put someone to sleep, it will create a comfortable environment and experience so that the patient can receive the oral healthcare they need.
